Leaf Notes

Terms of Service

Effective 4 November 2026

The short version

These terms apply to the Leaf Notes app for Linux, Windows and Android (“the app”) and to the website leafnotes.briggen.dev. Leaf Notes is made by Nils Briggen, an individual developer in Switzerland (“we”, “us”). By downloading or using the app you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

1. Using Leaf Notes

We let you download, install and use the app free of charge, for personal, educational or work purposes, on as many devices as you like. The source code is published at github.com/NilsBriggen/leaf-notes. Leaf Notes is free software, licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 (GPL-3.0). The GPL governs copying, changing and redistributing the app and its source code. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the GPL gives you. Where the two conflict, the GPL wins for the software, and these terms cover the rest, such as this website and the third-party services the app connects to.

You don't need an account. You must be old enough to agree to these terms where you live, or have a parent's or guardian's permission.

2. Your content

Everything you create in Leaf Notes, such as notes, drawings, flashcards and recordings, belongs to you. We claim no rights to it, and since it's stored on your device and in places you choose, we never receive it. You're responsible for your content and for having the right to use any material you import, such as PDFs, pictures and recordings.

3. Recordings

The app can record audio. Recording people without their consent is illegal in many places, and many schools and universities have rules about recording lectures. You're responsible for getting any permission you need before you record.

4. Third-party services

Some optional features connect the app to services run by others:

We don't run, control or answer for these services, including whether they're available, what they cost or how they handle your data. You're responsible for complying with their terms and for any charges on your API keys. Leaf Notes is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google, Anthropic, OpenAI or any other provider mentioned on this site.

5. AI-generated content

Summaries, quiz questions, flashcards, rewrites, equations and handwriting transcriptions, whether made by an AI service or by the built-in recogniser, can be incomplete or wrong. Check them before you rely on them, particularly for exams, graded work, or anything medical, legal or financial. Follow your school's rules on using AI.

6. Acceptable use

Don't use Leaf Notes to break the law or anyone's rights, for example to record people unlawfully or to store and share material you have no right to. When you use connected services, don't misuse them or get around their limits through the app.

7. Backups and sync

Leaf Notes saves carefully. It writes files safely so a crash doesn't truncate them, and when sync conflicts it keeps both versions instead of deleting one. Still, no software is perfect, and devices get lost or break. You're responsible for keeping backups of notes that matter to you.

8. Updates and availability

We may release updates that add, change or remove features, and we may stop developing the app. The app runs on your device and doesn't depend on any server of ours, so a version you've installed keeps working with your local notes. This website and its download links may change or go offline without notice.

9. No warranty

As stated in sections 15 and 16 of the GPL-3.0, the app is provided free of charge, “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, to the extent permitted by law.

10. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, we're not liable for any indirect or consequential damage, or for lost data, lost profits or lost study time, that comes from using or being unable to use the app or any connected service. This doesn't limit liability for intent or gross negligence, or any other liability that can't be excluded by law. If you're a consumer, nothing in these terms removes rights that mandatory consumer protection law gives you.

11. Ending use

You can stop using Leaf Notes at any time by uninstalling it. Your notes remain in the data folder and any sync location until you delete them (see the Privacy Policy). If you seriously break these terms, the rights given to you in section 1 end.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. When we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page. If you keep using the app after a change, you accept the new terms. Changes don't apply to anything that happened before them.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by Swiss law, excluding its conflict-of-law rules and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. Disputes go to the competent courts in Switzerland, unless mandatory law gives you, as a consumer, the right to bring a claim in your own country.
